Abstract Details
Purpose:
Quantity of straylight varies with the degree of the disease of the cataract. In addition, it is thereby important for ophthalmologists to know what kind of image they watch. Here, the purpose is the development of the system to simulate images of the outside world by degree of straylight.
Setting:
University laboratory, Chiba Japan
Methods:
Using a CCD camera and the neutral density (ND) filter with different density levels, photos of the outside world are taken. The RGB brightness image is constructed from these photos by a computer. The retinal optical image is obtained by convolution processing using point spread function (PSF) varying with degree of the dispersion with a ciliary pattern derived by Van den Berg. The perceive images were derived by using commercial high dynamic range (HDR) software called Photomatix of HDRsoft®.
Results:
Here, the photos of a car with headlights-on in night were taken. The headlight had the brightness about 1 million times bigger than neighboring one. The PSFs with straylight index of 1.0 (normal eyes) and 1.4 (early period of cataract) were used for simulation. The difference in spreading of double is found in the simulated images. This was about the same with the spreading of the observation using Tiffen® BlackProMist2 filter that can simulates cataract. But the difference in ciliary pattern was seen a little.
Conclusions:
The method that simulates vanity of the cataract is considered to be useful. But, as for the ciliary pattern, it will be necessary to examine it in future, because it seems to vary according to the distribution of small particles in eye.
