Purpose:
To give the long-term success rates of punctal dilatation with insertion of perforated punctal plugs (PPP) for the management of acquired punctal stenosis.
Setting:
Departmant of Ophthalmology, Istanbul education research hospital
Methods:
The medical charts of patients who underwent PPP implantation for the management of acquired punctal stenosis were retrospectively evaluated. Before surgery and at 1 and 6 months after surgery, subjective evaluation of tearing was assessed using Munk scores. The size of the punctum was graded based on slit-lamp examination, and measurement of tear meniscus height was done using optical coherence tomography. In all patients, punctal dilation was performed prior to the insertion of plugs.
Results:
A total of 43 eyes (26 patients) were studied.The subjective epiphora score was significantly reduced after surgery and maintained until 6 months after the surgery (2 for trend test, P < .001). The mean preoperative tear height (453.2 ± 251.3 µm) was significantly reduced both at 2 month after surgery (352.3 ± 221.7 µ m; P =0 .003, paired t test ) and at 6months after surgery (376.2 ±215.4 µ m; P = 0.004, paired t test . The functional success rate was 72.1% and anatomic success rate was 81.4 % at 6 months after surgery.
Conclusions:
PPP implantation was an anatomically and functionally effective procedure for severe punctal stenosis patients, maintaining large puncta for fairly long periods.
