Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical quality in-vitro of two designs of Visian Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICLs) for different powers and optical apertures

Setting:

University of Valencia, Spain

Methods:

The NIMO TR1504 (Lambda-X, Belgium) was used to measure the Visian ICL V4c and V5, which have different optical diameter. These lenses were measured for -3.00, -6.00, -9.50, and -10.50 diopters at different optical apertures from 3.00 mm to 6.00 mm, depending on lens power and model. The root mean square (RMS) of higher order aberrations (HOAs) was analysed. Strehl ratio, point spread functions and simulated images were calculated from wavefront aberrations.

Results:

No statistical significant differences were obtained at any Zernike RMS and RMS of HOAs between the Visian ICL V4c and V5 lenses with the same power and optical aperture (P > 0.05). All lenses evaluated had negative spherical aberration, which increased with the lens power. Strehl ratio values showed no statistical significant differences between both lenses with the same power and pupil aperture. Minimal differences were appreciated in PSFs and simulated images between both lenses.

Conclusions:

Visian ICL V4c and V5 lenses showed good and comparable in-vitro optical quality, which was similar to a perfect lens in the sense that it should not affect the visual performance after its implantation. Patients with larger pupil diameters could benefit of the Visian ICL V5 implantation, since this lens showed a remarkable in-vitro optical quality with a larger optical diameter than its previous design.
