Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe how our training programme tracks and uses Posteior Capsule Rupture (PCR) rates of trainees to enhance cataract surgical training.

Setting:

National Healthcare Group (NHG) Ophthalmology Residency Programme, at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, a tertiary centre where about 5500 cataract surgeries are performed each year.

Methods:

Our programme uses DVD recorders to record all cataract surgeries. Those in which a PCR occurs when operated by a trainee are then edited and presented by the trainee at a monthly surgical video round. Held in a friendly setting, this is attended by all staff members, at which advice is given as to how the PCR could have been avoided, or better managed, if applicable. The training director is also kept updated of each trainee's PCR rates on a monthly basis, and remedial action is taken when necessary.

Results:

Resident PCR rates of between 10.5% and 14.7% have been described in literature. Our rates of 5.5% and 1.93% for junior and senior residents respectively compare very favourably to these.

Conclusions:

Our programme religiously tracks PCR rates of trainees, and all cases of PCR are presented by the trainees in a non-persecutory environment on a monthly basis at a surgical video round. There has been positive feedback from both trainers and trainees with regard to this system, supported by very favourable PCR rates as compared to those that have been described in literature.
