Purpose:
Evaluate primary IOL implantation in children under one year-old with congenital and developmental cataract, treated by the Brazilian Public Health System (BPHS).
Setting:
Botucatu Medical School, São Paulo State University- Brazil.
Methods:
Children´s cataract eyes, age from 1.5 to 12 months old were operated. After general anesthesia, were measured keratometry and ultrasonic immersion biometry for IOL calculation and selection. The surgery was performed by bimanual anterior phaco aspiration, through the capsulorhexis. A single piece hydrophobic acrylic IOL was implanted in the capsular bag through a 2.4 mm corneal incision. The posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy were performed through pars plana /plicata using an anterior vitrector, after the IOL implantation. After surgery, a under anesthesia examination have been performed each 3 months until one year-old and each 6 months after one year-old.
Results:
At this moment were operated 20 eyes from 13 children; seven had bilateral cataract and six unilateral cataract. The average age at the surgery was 4.36 ± 2.69 (2 -9 months old). The Follow up ranges from 4 to 1.5 years. Four eyes from four children presented visual axis opacity three months after cataract surgery and were re-operated. Glaucoma or other complications were not observed up to now.
Conclusions:
These partial results had shown that the primary IOL implantation using this technique is safe for children under one year-old with congenital and developmental cataract.
