Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of use of multifocal IOL in children with congenital cataract.

Setting:

Irkutsk Branch of S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Irkutsk, Russia

Methods:

Restor Multifocal IOLs and Restor Toric IOLs were implanted to 6 children (12 eyes) aged from 7 to 15 years with congenital bilateral cataracts. Before and after surgery were studied mono- and binocular visual acuity at different distances, binocular functions, including the deep and stereoscopic vision, fusion reserves. Calculation of the lens was made by the standard formulas based on results of optical biometry, corneal topography and age of the patient. At 1, 6 and 12 months after surgery, all children receive a comprehensive pleoptic treatment by the original method.

Results:

During the 1-year follow-up period in all children a gradual increase in visual acuity on the main distances was noted. In 1 month visual acuity into distance was 0,51+/-0,02 (before the operation, it was equal 0,38+/-0,02), in 6 months - 0,62+/-0,04, in 1 year - 0,68+/-0 02, p=0,005. At close distances visual acuity at 1 month reached 0,56+/0,04 (before the operation, it was equal 0,42+/-0,02), after 6 months 0,65+/-0,04, 1 year - 0,71+/- 0,03, p=0,005. Binocular visual function were up on 0,08+/-0,02 units. Expansion of fusion field and activation of binocular interaction mechanisms were revealed.

Conclusions:

Multifocal intraocular correction in children with congenital cataract in combination with pleoptic treatment increases the resolution of the visual system and opens up new perspectives in the rehabilitation of patients in this category.
