Setting:

Magrabi Eye Hospital, Cairo, Egypt

Methods:

11 patient with different stages of acanthameba keratitis treated by cross linking through epithelium removed 9-mm diameter zone Photosensitizing drops containing 0.1% riboflavin in dextran 20% were applied on the cornea, once every 3 minutes for 30 minutes. 365-nm wavelength of UV-A light source was used for irradiation, carefully avoiding the limbal area. Corneal surface irradiance was approximately 3 mW/cm2 for a period of 30min. During the induction period, 0.1% riboflavin in 20% dextran drops were topically administered to the cornea at intervals of 2 to 3min

Results:

72% of patient had regressed sign of corneal infiltration and symptoms,18% had stopped progression and had stable condition, only 10% had a progressed disease and did a tectonic graft
