Purpose:
To examine the results of the trans-epithelial corneal collagen cross linking (CXL) procedure performed in keratoconus patients with thin corneas
Setting:
Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital
Methods:
Twenty nine eyes of 20 patients that performed trans-epithelial CXL procedure between January 2012-2014 in Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital's Cornea Department were examined in our study. Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) were <400 microns in all eyes. Total 10 minutes riboflavin instilling (4 minutes Paracell-6 minutes Vibex Extra) and then ultraviolet-A (UV-A)(5,4J/cm2) (Avedro CXL) performed while corneal epithelium was intact in all eyes. Preoperative and 1,6 and 12 months postoperative visual acuities, refractive status, keratometric values (K1,K2,Kapex) and CCT values were detected. Also preoperative and 12 months postoperative high order aberrations were detected. .
Results:
The mean age was 24±5,4 years. Preoperative and postoperative no significant difference detected in uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). In preoperative and postoperative controls refractive, cylinderical and spherical equivalant results were not detected differently. The mean K apex value was 63,4 D preoperatively and was detected 62,8 D after 12 months after the procedure.(p=0,08). The mean CCT values were statistically decreased 1 month after the procedure(p<0,01) Preoperative and 12 months postoperative high order aberrations (3mm) were not different. No complications were reported in any patients during the procedure.
Conclusions:
Transepithelial CXL treatment is a modality which is performed in keratoconus patients with thin corneas.. Our study reported that transepithelial CXL halts the progression in keratoconus patients with thin corneas
