Abstract Details
Purpose:
Intracameral cerfuroxime is becoming the standard of care in postoperative endophthalmitis prophylaxis. Dilution errors may result in overdose and undue toxicity affecting the posterior segment.
Setting:
Hospital de Torrevieja, Spain
Methods:
16 cases of toxic posterior segment syndrome were retrospectively evaluated. The origin was found to be 3-fold overdose of intracameral cefuroxime.
Results:
Only close observation was taken. All cases recovered excellent visual acuities. Literature review findings were discussed.
Conclusions:
Dilution errors should be avoided due to risk of serious retinal damage and permanent visual loss.
