Abstract Details
Purpose:
We aim to describe the demographic characteristics of patients with the presumptive clinical diagnosis of sympathetic ophthalmia secondary to cataract surgery in a reference center in Mexico.
Setting:
Patients registered with a medical record at the hospital database at Instituto de Oftalmología – Fundación Conde de Valenciana I.A.P. in Mexico City, Mexico.
Methods:
Retrospective study. We analyze the medical records of the hospital database of all the patients diagnosed with presumptive sympathetic ophthalmia and a cataract surgery history from September 2007 to September 2014. We include: age, gender, time from the surgery to the onset of symptoms, treatment received and progression of the inciting eye to ptisis bulbi We exclude those patients with an incomplete record.
Results:
We found 42 medical records. 36 complete records. Eight patients had a history of cataract surgery. 6 received phacoemulsification + intraocular lens implantation (75%). One underwent extracapsular cataract extraction + intraocular lens implant (12.5%). One patients underwent unspecified congenital cataract extraction surgery + afaquia (12.5%). Mean age: 60.62 years (ranged: 36-75 years-old). 4 females. 4 males. Exciting eye: right eye 50%. Time elapsed from surgery to onset of symptoms: mean 113.75 months (ranged: 16- 540 months). 4 patients required immunosuppressant treatment (2 methotrexate, 1 azathioprine, 1 cyclophosphamide). 2 inciting eyes progressed to ptitis bulbi (25%).
Conclusions:
The presumptive diagnosis of sympathetic ophthalmia in patients with a history of cataract surgery was found in both woman and man of all groups of ages. It is an important study because it describes a particular group of patients whom underwent cataract surgery with posterior presumptive affection of the contralateral eye. There was not a specific scheme of treatment.
