Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze efficiacy for innovative method of iris-fixation of pc IOLs for aphakia correction in cases of absence of capsular support.
Setting:
The Mobile Eye Hospital (MEH) working since 2003 within Armenian Eye Care Project (AECP).
Methods:
218 eyes having different degrees of zonular support lost underwent surgery: 127 ICCEs, 61 complicated phacoes, 5 combined with trabeculectomy, 13 decentrated IOL repair, 12 delayed implantations.
Pc IOL's distal haptics positioned on the anterior surface of iris while optic remained in posterior chamber. Just one suture used for pupil reconstruction.
Results:
Almost all eyes (216) had stable IOL position and IOP, visual outcomes depends on coexisting eye diseases: in 7 year follow up for pure cataract group 28.5% have borderline BCVA (20/400-20/60) and 71.5% have high BCVA (better than 20/60), and the same for complicated cataract group: 12% were poor (lower than 20/400); 55% borderline & 33% high. Targeted refraction changed up to -1.00 D.
Conclusions:
Iris-root support fixation method allows rapid completion of surgery, use of same IOL, no enlargement of wound, no need for special instruments.
