Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case of Descemet's membrane tear and detachment following cataract surgery that partially resolved.

Setting:

Observational case report, University Eye Clinic of Trieste, Italy

Methods:

A 82-year-old glaucomatous woman underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery. No Descemet's membrane injury was noted intraoperatively and on the first postoperative day. One week later, the patient presented a tear and a partial Descemet's membrane detachment (DMD) with corneal edema centrally located. Her best correct visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/400.

Results:

The patient was treated with topical antinflammatory therapy for three months. DMD partially resolved within five months with a recovery of 20/25 BCVA.

Conclusions:

DMD is a rare but serious complication of intraocular surgery, most commonly cataract extraction. Large Descemet's membrane detachments usually require surgical intervention, while small detachments typically resolve with topical medical therapy within few months.
