Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy of green tea extract in the treatment of the patients with dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction.
Setting:
Poostchi Ophthalmology Research Center
Methods:
In this study, we selected 60 patients with age range from 30 to 70 years. These patients divided two groups by blocked randomization method. In control group: Standard treatment include artificial tear eye drop three times a day for one month, in intervention group: Artificial tear eye drop the same dose and topical green tea extract three times a day for one month. All patients evaluated at the baseline and end of the study by clinical symptoms by ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score, shirmer test, tear breakup time (TBUT), corneal and conjunctival staining and meibum score.
Results:
All those p-values were statistically significant in favor the green tea group. Both groups were free of any complication. In addition, topical green tea eye drops have not showed any side-effects.
Conclusions:
Green tea extract is an effective, safe and well-tolerated topical treatment of mild and moderate evaporative dry eyes and MGD.
