Abstract Details
Purpose:
It has been established miR-184 may potentially play an important role in the pathophyisiology of primary corneal ectasies, it is implicated in the regulation of apoptosis in corneal tissue. The purpose of this work is determining presence or abscense of its mutation in mexican patients with primary corneal ectasies.
Setting:
CONVAL
Methods:
This is a prospective observational study made to determine the presence or absence of mutations in the microRNA miR184 in 200 patients clinically and topographically diagnosed with a primary corneal ectasia. The patients were studied through DNA amplification by PCR. It was also identified in 20 corneal bottons with the condition the expression of this microRNA compared with 20 control bottons.
Results:
There was not a significant association between corneal ectasias and mutation in miR-184. The expression of miR-184 was significantly lower in patients with primary corneal ecstasies.
Conclusions:
miR-184 has been established as an important candidate gene for the presence of primary corneal ectasies. The fact that its expression is significantly lower than in patients without the condition suggests that a bigger sample size could increase the significance of this sudy.
