Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate outcome of femtosecond lasik in pediatric age(5 to 10 years) with unilateral and bilateral high myopia and amblyopia

Setting:

Tertiary health centre

Methods:

A retrospective study including 18 patients (5 to 10 years) from hospital record was done from dec 2010 to dec 2014.Out 18 , 16 were having unilateral high myopia and 2 had bilateral.Myopia was in range of -7.0 to -16.0 diopter spherical equivalent.All patients had amblyopia.Out of 18, 6 had constant or intermittent exotropia & 2 had esotropia.All patients were worked up for visual acuity,subjective refraction,cycloplegic refraction,anterior and posterior segment examination,corneal topography,ultrasound pachymetry,aberrometry and retinal acuity metry.Femtosecond lasik was performed in all for balancing refraction and follow up was done for minimum period of two years.

Results:

All (100%)patients improved with 3 lines on snellen acuity chart with in 3 months with or without correction.Out of 6 patients with exotropia, 5 improved after lasik and only one had to undergo exotropia correction.Both esotropia patients underwent squint correction after 6 to 8 weeks of lasik surgery.All patients were having stable corneal topography in followup done for minimum 2 years.

Conclusions:

Early Pediatric lasik for balancing refraction in two eyes by femtosecond laser is an effective way to correct dense amblyopia and give quality vision and life to children
