Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe different morphological patterns of the palpebral glands using a novel non-contact meibography system.
Setting:
A sample of 30 patient was studied at the ophthalmology department of Hospital Universitario Fundación Alcorcón of Madrid.
Methods:
The upper and lower eyelids glands were observed after eversion using the Oculus Keratograph 5M, a non-contact meibography system based in placido discs with an infrared illumination system.
The glandular tissue loss and destructuration was scored in grades from 0 to 3 depending on the size of the affected area (0= no loss or destructuration of meibomian glands; 1= area loss less than 1/3 of the glandular area 2=area loss between 1/3 and 2/3; 3= area loss more than 2/3). Different cases are presented to illustrate the morphological characteristics of glandular tissue most commonly encountered in clinical practice.
Results:
In all cases, the obtained images allowed to classify the morphology and loss of the glandular tissue in one of the established patterns.
Conclusions:
This non-contact infrared meibography digital system provides images of the meibomian glands in a quick and non-invasive way.
The obtained meibographies can allow to correlate the findings in the glandular morphology with clinical symptoms and other parameters of the ocular surface.
