Abstract Details

Purpose:

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of early combined pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for the treatment of acute postoperative infectious endophthalmitis.

Setting:

Zagazig University Hospitals,Ophthalmology Department, Egypt

Methods:

Interventional case series of 14 cases complained from endophthalmitis secondary to phacoemulsification were retrospectively studied. Patients underwent early vitrectomy with intravitreal antibiotic injection and silicone oil injection. The follow up ranged from 1 to 48 months (mean of 22 months).

Results:

All patients had controlled infection at the first procedure. In one case (7.14%), a severe proliferatative vitreoretinopathy induced loss of vision. Another case developed inferior retinal detachment (7.14%) and treated by recurrent vitrectomy.

Conclusions:

Early combined parsplana vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade is safe and effective in the treatment strategy of infectious endophthalmitis.
