Abstract Details

Purpose:

We report on 15 cases of toxic anterior segment syndrome after uneventful phaco surgery,ICL,combined proceduredone in two consecutive weeks at month of April 2012 out of total 24 patients .

Setting:

Taif University, Airport Rd, Al Huwaya, Taif Saudi Arabia

Methods:

We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients who had developed toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) after (13) uneventful phacoemulsification for senile cataracts,one ICL,and one combined trabeclectomy with phaco surgery on April of 2012. Clinical features and all possible causes were investigated including irrigating solutions or drugs, surgical instruments or intraocular lenses, sterilization techniques for instruments, or any other accompanying disease.

Results:

The patients consisted of 9 males and 6 females with an average age of 50.8years. one surgeons had performed all surgeries. No abnormal preoperative or operative findings were reported. Nevertheless, 6 patients developed a severe degree of corneal edema. Ordinary treatments were not helpful. We suspect that the new viscoelastic used recently is the cause of TASS in all cases,.

Conclusions:

Toxic anterior segment syndrome requires special attention and thorough management, including using known viscoelastic material and adequate washing out of all remnant viscoelastic material.
