Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the location of coaxially sighted corneal light reflex (CSCLR) before and after pupillary dilation and to investigate the locational relationship with pupil center.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Hanyang University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.

Methods:

Normal subjects aged 20 to 45 years without ocular disease underwent white-to-white (WTW) mode measurements using IOLMaster 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany). WTW value, distance of the CSCLR from WTW center in a Cartesian coordinates (Ix, Iy), pupillary diameter, and distance of the CSCLR from pupil center in a Cartesian coordinates (Px, Py) were measured before and after pupillary dilation. The sign of x value (Ix, Px) in each left eye was reversed. The locations of WTW center, CSCLR, and pupil center were compared before and after pupillary dilation.

Results:

Eighty-six eyes from 46 patients aged 28.9±6.4 years were included. The WTW value of each eye was not changed before and after pupillary dilation. The change of Ix (-0.01±0.04 mm) and Iy (0.01 ± 0.06 mm) after pupillary dilation did not show statistical significances (P=0.332 and 0.579, respectively). The Px and Py before pupillary dilation were 0.05±0.14 mm and -0.04±0.14 mm and those after pupillary dilation were 0.09±0.10 mm and 0.12±0.16 mm (P=0.046 and 0.000, respectively).

Conclusions:

The location of CSCLR did not show significant change after pupillary dilation and mostly superonasal to the pharmacologically dilated pupil center. It could help surgeons in case of centration tried under dilated pupil condition such as implanting multifocal IOLs.
