Corneal densitometry analysis of the treatment zone after small incisionlLenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia and comparison to femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK (FS-LASIK)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the clarity of the treatment zone after SMILE and compare it to FS-LASIK.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Philipps University of Marburg, German

Methods:

58 myopic eyes of 33 patients who underwent SMILE were compared to 58 eyes of 33 patients treated with FS-LASIK. All procedures were performed by a single surgeon using VisuMax (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG/Germany). Pentacam (Oculus, Germany) was used for pre- and 3 months postoperative corneal densitometry analysis. The densitometry was recorded at four concentric radial zones (0-2mm, 2-6mm, 6-10mm and 10-12mm) around the corneal apex as well as at three different anatomical layers (anterior, central, posterior) with emphasis on the visually relevant 0-2mm and 2-6mm zones. The densitometry values were correlated with the ablation depth and the lenticule thickness.

Results:

The preoperative total densitometry in 0-2 mm zone was 18.4 ± 1.0 gray scale units (GSU) in the FS-LASIK group and 17.8 ± 1.1 GSU in the SMILE group. Postoperative corneal density in the same zone was 18.0 ± 1.0 GSU for FS-LASIK and 17.8 ± 1.1 GSU in the SMILE group . For the 2-6mm zone the values were preop vs. postop for FS-LASIK 16.9 ± 1.1 GSU vs. 16.8 ± 1.2 GSU. In the SMILE group the values changed from 16.2 ± 1.2 GSU to 16.4 ± 1.2 GSU. Furthermore, there was no correlation between the corneal densitometry values and the depth of the ablation or the thickness of the lenticule.

Conclusions:

The postoperative corneal density of all radial zones and layers presented no significant differences between the two techniques and no correlation to the depth of the ablation or the thickness of the lenticule.
