Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the possibility and efficacy of Presbyopic ICL (PICL) in the management of presbyopia. PICL is a multifocal implantable contact lens with diffractive area of 3.5 mm Optic diameter and concentric rings of different refractive errors.

Setting:

Interventional case series.

Methods:

19 eye of 12 patients underwent PICL implant. All patients were >45 years of age. Preoperative refraction was done and power of PICL was calculated. PICL was implanted through a 2.8 mm clear corneal incision under topical anaesthesia. The lens was placed behind the iris in the sulcus. The patients were followed up 2 hours, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure and refraction was done at all visits.

Results:

Postoperative unaided visual acuity of 20/20, N-6 was present in 16 eyes. Intraocular Pressure was raised in 2 eyes at 1 week follow-up which was controlled by topical anti-glaucoma drugs. 2 patients complained of glare after 1 month of follow up.

Conclusions:

Presbyopic ICL can be a good alternative for the management of presbyopia. The study is limited by a smaller sample and a shorter follow up. A larger controlled clinical trial is necessary to evaluate long term final outcomes.
