Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the Refractive Hydrophilic Acrylic multifocal RAYNER IOLs in terms of safety and post op results stressing on improvement in quality of vision after cataract surgery and compatibility with other eye having its own crystalline lens, monofocal IOL or multifocal IOL.

Setting:

WAPDA Teaching Hospital Complex Central Park Medical College Lahore Pakistan

Methods:

Prospective study was planned. 25 eyes 0f 21 patients with the diagnosis of cataract and no other ocular pathology were included. Multifocal RAYNER 630 F IOL was implanted during phaco cataract surgery over a period of 42 months from October 2010 to April 2014. All patients were between 45 to 85 years of age. Routine pre-op evaluation and biometry was carried out. All patients were operated by same surgeon. Post-operative assessment was performed one day 1, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and every year thereon. Quality of life was assessed by interviewing the patients at least 6 months post-op.

Results:

All 25eyes had smooth Phaco and intra bag injection of IOLs with Insertion System provided by Rayner. Follow up ranged from 6 to 42 months. Only 4 patients had bilateral implantation (G-1-MFBE ). 7 patients had multifocal IOL in one eye and monofocal IOL in other eye (G-2-Multifocal Monofocal). 13 patients were phakic in other eye with varying degree of lenticular changes (G-3-Multifocal Phakic). One patient had no vision in other eye. All the IOLs remained excellently centered. 5 patients had YAG capsulotomy ranging from 9 months to 32 months post-op. All of the patients are comfortable with both eyes open.

Conclusions:

Mixing and matching of Refractive Hydrophilic Acrylic RAYNER multifocal IOLs is possible in motivated well counseled patients. Refractive multifocal IOL Rayner 630F appears superior in our experience regarding centration and perfection in far and near vision for most of the tasks. According to our study the Multifocal IOL Implantation Each Eye is ideal, Multifocal/Monofocal Combination is near to Ideal and Multifocal/Phakic Combination is acceptable.
