Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate distance, intermediate, near visual outcomes, contrast sensitivity, optical phenomena and spectacle independence in patients who received GRIN (gradient refraction index) multifocal IOLs with different additional power.

Setting:

S.Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex State Institution, Russia

Methods:

The study analysed 20 eyes of 15 patients with age ranging between 52 and 79 years. 2 groups of eyes were differentiated: group A, 10 eyes implanted with the gradient IOLs with additional power 3.0; group B, 10 eyes implanted with the gradient IOLs with additional power 2.0. IOL optical part is composed of one polymer with different refraction index. We evaluated uncorrected аnd the best spectacle corrected visual aquity (VA) for far, near and intermediate distances, contrast sensitivity (CS) and amplitude of pseudoaccommodation. Also we assessed glare, halos and the personal satisfaction of the patients.

Results:

Three months after implantation mean uncorrected distance VA was 0.91, mean uncorrected near VA 0.62, mean uncorrected intermediate VA 0.45 for group A, mean uncorrected distance VA was 0.90, mean uncorrected near VA 0.39, mean uncorrected intermediate VA 0.82 for group B. Subjective defocusing curve suggested a better defocusing performance for group A in the near vision range, and for group B in the intermediate vision range.

Conclusions:

The study found high functional results after use of GRIN multifocal lenses with different additional power, high spectacle independence and low incidence of optical phenomena.
