Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the refractive results after implantation of TEKNIS Toric IOL (Abbott Medical Optics inc. (AMO), USA) in patients with RK.

Setting:

Moscow Helmholtz Research Institute of Eye Diseases, Russia

Methods:

Corneal astigmatism in 51 consecutive eyes with RK was measured using a dual Scheimpflug-Placido topography (Galilei G 2, Ziemer, Switzerland) before and after phacoemulsification with implantation of monofocal IOL. Patients with RK (6 consecutive eyes) underwent phacoemulsification with implantation of Tecnis Toric IOL. All of them had no history data. The predicted residual astigmatism after toric IOL implantation was calculated using preoperative astigmatism values from the total corneal power (TCP) determined by ray tracing through the measured anterior and posterior corneal surfaces using Galilei G 2. Targeted versus achieved astigmatic outcomes were compared.

Results:

More than 10 degrees difference between Sim K axis and TCP axis was obtained in 8 (15%) cases. TCP axis was unstable in 13 (25%) cases and amount of total corneal astigmatism in 9 (17%) cases after phacoemulsification. The prediction error was calculated as the difference between the predicted astigmatism and the manifest astigmatism 1,5 – 6 month postoperatively and was from 0 to 0,75 D. Uncorrected distance visual acuity was 20/20 from 1,5 to 6 month after surgery.

Conclusions:

Almost 25% of patients after RK had unstable parameters of cornea after phacoemulsification. TEKNIS Toric IOL could be a good solution for the post-RK cataract case.
