Femtosecond laser vs mechanical microkeratome flap creation: higher-order aberration induction comparison

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare changes in higher-order aberrations using different methods of flap creation.

Setting:

10th Minsk Hospital, Belorussian Medical Academy of post-graduate education, Belarus

Methods:

In this retrospective study 22 patients (44 eyes) with different myopic refractive errors underwent flap creation only. The average spherical equivalent was -2,25 to 0,00 diopters with average astigmatism of 0,00 to -0,5 diopters. All patients were divided into two groups according to the flap creation method: mechanical microkeratome (Moria M3 Evolution One-Use Plus SBK) and Femtosecond Laser (AMO IntraLase FS 60). Preoperative and 3 months postoperative follow-up corneal aberration measurement was performed.

Results:

Both groups showed statistically significant changes in spherical aberration (P < .001). The group with mechanical microkeratome flap creation showed statistically significant trefoil and coma aberration induction in comparison to femtosecond flap creation group.

Conclusions:

The group of patients with microkeratome flap creation showed greater induction of higher-order aberrations than the femtosecond laser group.
