Abstract Details

Purpose:

*Extra Co authors: Sajjad Mahmood, Optegra Eye Sciences, Dan Nguyen, Optegra Eye Sciences, Say Aun Quah, Optegra Eye Sciences, Shafiq Rehman, Optegra Eye Science To compare toric IOL alignment in patients undergoing IOL implantation supported by a new intraoperative digital guidance system and patients undergoing surgery without the alignment system.

Setting:

Optegra Yorkshire Eye Hospital, Bradford, UK and Optegra Manchester Eye Hospital, Manchester, UK

Methods:

Mean age of the patients was 75±9 years. In 44 patients the CallistoEye 3.1 system (Zeiss, Germany) was used and in 21 patients a Mendez ring was used as a control. Toric IOL alignment was measured immediately after surgery using an image captured by the alignment system. One week and six weeks after surgery subjective refraction and vision was assessed.

Results:

IOL alignment deviated by 2.07±1.79° from intended target axis in the study group and by 4.71±3.79° in the control group (p=0.06). The incidence of axis deviation greater than 5° was 4.5% in the study group compared to 42.9% in the control group. At one-week, subjective mean spherical equivalent refraction (MSE) was +0.14±0.65D and +0.13±0.43D in the study and control groups respectively (p=0.962). At the 6 week visit MSE was +0.19±0.59D and +0.18±0.44D in the study and control group, respectively (p=0.924). Best-corrected distance visual acuity was 0.08±0.18logMAR at the one-week visit and 0.04±0.13logMAR at the six-week visit in the study group and 0.03±0.16logMAR and 0.03±0.15logMAR in the control group respectively.

Conclusions:

The evaluation showed a difference in favour of the CallistoEye system group for alignment of the toric IOL. Post-operative mean refraction and distance visual acuity was similar in both groups.
