Session Title: Pseudophakic IOLs: Toric Cataract Surgery Equipment

Session Date/Time: Tuesday 08/09/2015 | 14:00-16:00

Paper Time: 15:14

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the efficacy of intraoperative wavefront guidance to achieve optimal alignment without prior marking

Setting:

Private Hospital,GSD Villa Erbos, Bologna, Italy

Methods:

This study was performed with the assistance of the intraoperative aberrometer I-O-W-A (Eyesight&Vision, Germany). The aphakic astigmatic axis was characterized in an intraoperative measurement. First, this axis was utilized as a guide for the final alignment of the toric IOL. Then, the IOL was further rotated to tune for a minimal residual cylinder. We implanted different toric IOLs with an astigmatic equivalent >2 diopters in the corneal plane. No marking procedure was performed before surgery

Results:

In total, 20 eyes will be included. The intraoperative wavefront on the pseudophakic eye is compared against the wavefront acquired by iTrace on the first follow-up

Conclusions:

The intraoperative wavefront technology provides exciting new means to minimize the pseudophakic astigmatism. The continuous intraoperative measurement equips the surgeon with a guidance tool to optimize the alignment without the need of preoperative marking. We found high correlation between the final intraoperatively determined ametropia and the measurement on the first follow-up.
