Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the rotational stability and capsular bag performance of a novel hydrophobic single piece intraocular lens (IOL) with two symmetrical bifid haptics and a hydrophilic IOL of identical design.

Setting:

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocuar Surgery (VIROS), Hanusch Hospital, Vienna.

Methods:

Eighty eyes of 40 patients scheduled for bilateral cataract surgery were included in this randomised study. Each patient received the hydrophobic IOL (PodEye, Physiol, Liège, Belgium) in one eye and the hydrophilic IOL (Pod AY, Physiol) in the other eye. Rotational stability, IOL decentration, IOL tilt, anterior chamber depth (ACD) and visual acuity (logMAR) were evaluated three months, one year and two years postoperatively.

Results:

Preliminary results after 3 months follow-up showed that the mean absolute rotation of the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic IOL was 3,1° (±0,9°) and 1,3° (±1,4°), respectively. ACD was 4.87 mm (±507 µm) in the hydrophilic IOL group and 4.77 mm (±388 µm) in the hydrophobic IOL group. ACD shifted by 58 µm (±34 µm) in the hydrophilic group and by 219 µm (±318 µm) in the hydrophobic group.

Conclusions:

The hydrophobic IOL seems to offer a slightly better rotational stability than the hydrophilic IOL 3 months after surgery. A comprehensive analysis of IOL performance in the first twelve postoperative months will be presented.
