Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the results of a new sulcus-based pinhole intraocular implant. In contrast with others enlarged depth of focus IOLs, which aim primarily the treatment of presbyopia, this implant has been used mainly to treat cases of irregular corneal astigmatism (post-PK, post-RK, Kconus, etc.). The pinhole effect is able to minimize the impact of corneal aberrations, thus improving vision.

Setting:

Cançado-Trindade Eye Institute,Belo Horizonte,Brazil

Methods:

Pseudophakic patients with irregular corneal astigmatism and poor UCVA were treated with this new device. UCVA, BSCVA, contrast sensitivity, visual field examination were performed pre and post-operatively.

Results:

By reducing the size of the circle of confusion on the retina, this pinhole sulcus implant was able to improve vision, reduce the dependence on rigid contact lens and, ultimately, avoid corneal transplantation in these patients.

Conclusions:

This new sulcus-based pinhole implant represents a new alternative in the treatment of these challenging cases of irregular corneal astigmatism.
