Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the refractive and visual outcomes of the bilateral implant of a diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) with one elongated focus.

Setting:

Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega, Oviedo, Spain

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized study including 48 patients who underwent a bilateral lensectomy with implantation of a Tecnis Symfony (AMO, EEUU). Manifest preoperative sphere ranged from -19.50 to +8.50 diopters (D.) and power of the implants between +5.50 and +33.00 D. Preoperative astigmatism was in all cases below 2.00 D. Phacoemulsification surgery was combined with clear cornea relaxing incisions performed at the steepest meridian. All eyes were implanted with a capsular tension ring with square edges (AJL, Spain). Postoperatively, refraction, near, intermediate and distance visual acuities and need for Excimer enhancement were evaluated. Minimum follow-up was three months.

Results:

Mean preoperative monocular distance uncorrected visual acuity was 0.28±0.24 and improved to 0.80±0.25 after surgery. Mean distance corrected visual acuity was 0.79±0.22 and improved to 0.95±0.14. Mean binocular visual acuities measured at 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 cm were 0.41±0.10, 0.75±0.20, 0.83±0.20, 0.77±0.14 y 0.58±0.12 respectively. A questionaire completed by the patients revealed that 70% didn't need glasses for near vision.

Conclusions:

Tecnis Symfony IOL allows a good distance and intermediate uncorrected vision providing as well to 70% of patients with good near vision without the need of glasses.
