Abstract Details

Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of functional results and quality of vision after bilateral implantation of a new IOL with extended range of vision – Symfony IOL (AMO).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Kralovske Vinohrady and 3rd Medical Faculty Prague, Czech Republic.

Methods:

40 eyes of 20 patients with senile cataract underwent binocular implantation of Symfony IOL. Followed parameters included monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected visual acuity (VA) for far, near and intermediate distances, subjective refraction and contrast sensitivity under different light conditions. The quality of vision, glare, halos, spectacle independence and the subjective satisfaction of the patients was assessed with a questionnaire. Minimum follow-up time was 6 months.

Results:

92,5% of eyes achieved monocular UCDVA 0.8 decimal and better. Monocular UCNVA was in 77,5% eyes 0.6 or better at 40 cm, monocular UCIVA was in 90% of eyes 0.8 or better at 70 cm. Patients contrast sensitivity in both photopic and mesopic conditions was above population norms for age 50-75 years. Defocus curve showed no significant drops in VA. Any dysphotopic phenomena were present only in 6% of patients. None of the patients reported serious dysphotopic phenomena.

Conclusions:

Symfony IOL provides excellent vision at all distances with a smooth defocus curve.
