Abstract Details

Purpose:

A prospective randomized clinical trial compares the differences in clinical outcome between Nanolaser cataract surgery and standard phakoemulsifikation.

Setting:

Charlottenklinik for Eye Diesese,Stuttgart.

Methods:

76 patient were randomly distributed in a Nanolaser- and a phakoemulsifikation group. Surgery was performed under topical anesthesia by one experienced surgeon. Main outcome measurements were endothelial cell loss, corneal pachymetry 1 day postoperative, duration of surgery and consumption of BSS. The energy applied to the eye during surgery was assessed. Cataracts were included up to LOCS grade NIII.

Results:

There were no statistical significant differences with regard to visual acuity, endothelial cell count. Duration of surgery was in average 2 minutes longer in the Nanolaser group as well as the BSS consumption with 20 % more as in the phako group. Corneal pachymetry at day 1 postoperatively was lower in the Nanolaser group. Consuption of energy to the eye was significantly lower in the Nanolaser group with a max of 1.4 J compared to max 12.8 J in the shako group.

Conclusions:

Nanolaser cataract surgery has been developed to premium surgery with a smooth tissue reaction and surgical time comparable to standard phako. Advantages of this new technique are lowest energy level possible for cataract surgery, smooth tissue interaction due to no thermal side effects and the lack of mechanical alterations. Moreover in case of Nanolaser surgery the whole procedure is performed with single-use instruments
