Abstract Details

Purpose:

Since its first appearance in Russia in 2012, femtosecond laser-assistance has proved to be a safe and effective procedure, that increases the safety and predictability of cataract surgery. The purpose of our work was to study the advantages of femtosecond laser assistance in cataract surgery of standard and complicated cases.

Setting:

Eye Center ,East Sight Recovery, Moscow, Russia

Methods:

1250 procedures of femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery were performed in our clinic during the last two years. Among them were 890 eyes with standard mature cataracts and 360 eyes with complicated cataracts combined with lens subluxation, coexisting glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation syndrome or myopia of high degree. Before operation visual acuity (VA) was from pr.certa to 0.6, intraocular pressure 9-28 mm Hg. Femtosecond laser assistance was performed on Victus femtosecond laser platform and included anterior capsulotomy (4.2-5.0 mm in diameter), lens fragmentation to 6-8 fragments and corneal paracentesis formation.

Results:

In 20 cases intracapsular ring was implanted. The average ultrasound power was 14% First day after the surgery VA of 0.5 and higher was in 80% of all cases. 1 month after the procedure the average VA was 0.75 and 0.6 in standard cases and complicated cases respectively and kept stable during all follow up period. The target refraction with 0.75 D deviation was achieved in 98% of cases. During the femtolaser stage of the surgery the capsulotomy decentration and suction loss occured in 3 cases due to patient anxious behavior.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond laser assistance increases the safety, quality and predictability of phacoemulsification, decreases the rate of intraoperative complications and provides the stability of intraocular lens position.
