Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluation of the femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) technique compared with the manual phacoemulsification in white cataracts.

Setting:

Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute, Amritsar, India

Methods:

40 eyes of patients with white cataract were included . Group 1 included 20 eyes in whom femto-phaco( capsulotomy & lens fragmentation) was carried out. Group 2 included 20 eyes in whom conventional capsulorhexis & lens emulsification was performed. In both groups, the centring, size, free floating nature / capsular tags & peripheral extension of the capsulotomy was compared. The success of partial nuclear fragmentation in group 1 was noted. Postoperatively ,uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, endothelial cell density, Intraoperatively effective phacoemulsification time (EPT)and BSS volume were measured.

Results:

In Group 1, the centering & size was comparable with previous studies. Free floating capsulotomy was observed in 8 eyes. Capsulotomy was completed without peripheral extension in all the eyes. In Group 2 , the centering & sizing was an issue in 8 eyes . There was peripheral extension in one eye. Partial nuclear fragmentation was observed in 2 eyes in Group 1.

Conclusions:

The results indicate the FLACS technique provides better centring and sizing of capsulorhexis as compared to manual capsulorhexis. The partial fragmentation of nuclear pieces was possible in only 2 cases in Group 1.
