Abstract Details

Purpose:

Optical bench analysis and comparison of opacified and explanted versus new and clear Oculentis Lentis-LS-502-1 single piece hydrophilic acrylic blue light filtering intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

David J. Apple International Laboratory for Ocular Pathology & International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC), Dept. of Ophthalmology, Univ. of Heidelberg, Germany.

Methods:

In a laboratory study we compared the optical quality of 2 opacified and 2 clear Oculentis Lentis-LS-502-1 IOLs (+19,5 D and +22,5 D) using the OptiSpheric IOL Pro (Trioptics, Germany) optical bench. We measured modulation transfer function (MTF) in sagittal (MTFsag) and tangential (MTFtan) planes, at 50 lp/mm and 100 lp/mm. MTF area (MTFA) values were also calculated. Measurements of relative light transmission were performed. Furthermore, we compared visually the quality of images produced by these IOLs using USAF (United States Air Force) target analysis.

Results:

At 50 lp/mm MTFsag/MTFtan mean values for the +19,5 D clear IOL were 0,772/0,783, for the opacified, explanted one 0,760/0,778. For the +22,5 D clear IOL, these values were 0,756/0,753 and for the opacified one 0,736/0,686 respectively. The MTFA values (clear/opacified) in the +19,5 D IOL were 90,20%/88,05% and in the +22,5 D 82,72%/70,35%. The relative light transmission was 56,52% in the opacified +19,5 D IOL and 57,38% in the opacified +22,5 D IOL. The image quality of the USAF target was better with the clear IOL compared to that with the explanted, opacified one.

Conclusions:

Our laboratory study could show a slight reduction in MTF and MTFA values in opacified IOLs. However the differences between clear and opacified IOLs were more pronounced regarding light transmission. The reduced image quality is rather caused by the reduction of light transmission than by the MTF deterioration. USAF target pictures confirmed these results qualitatively. MTF and relative transmission values correlate with the reduced visual acuity of the patients after the opacification of the IOL.
