Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate accuracy of intraoperative aberrometry proprietary nomogram as compared to the Koch-Wang, Olsen, and Barrett Universal II Formulae in predicting intraocular lens power in eyes with axial lengths above 25.0 mm.

Setting:

Advanced Vision Care, Private Practice, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Methods:

Retrospective review of 52 eyes of 32 patients undergoing cataract surgery between 2013-2014 with a single platform intraocular lens (Acrysof, Alcon) and axial lengths greater than 25.0 mm. Intraoperative aberrometry (ORA, WaveTec), Holladay-1 adjusted Koch-Wang formula, Olson Formula, and Barrett Universal II Formula were compared. Consecutive eyes with axial lengths >25.0 mm undergoing cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation were included in the study. Eyes with prior history of laser vision correction, pre-existing corneal pathology, macular disease or staphylomas or were excluded from the study. Main outcome measures included mean absolute error and median absolute error.

Results:

Mean absolute error was 0.15 for intraoperative aberrometry, 0.25 for the Koch-Wang formula, 0.21 for the Olson formula and 0.19 for the Barrett Universal II formula. Median absolute error was 0.09 for intraoperative aberrometry, 0.12 for the Koch-Wang formula, 0.10 for the Olsen Formula and 0.12 for the Barrett Universal II Formula. Statistical significance between groups was not achieved.

Conclusions:

Intraoperative aberrometry appears to be comparable to the Koch-Wang, Olsen and Barrett Universal II Formulae to accurately predict intraocular lens power in eyes with axial lengths >25.0 mm.
