Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose is to demonstrate the bilateral visual outcomes of the FluidVision® AIOL (PowerVision, Inc., Belmont, CA, USA). The FluidVision AIOL consists of a refractive index matched silicone fluid filled optic connected by channels to two fluid filled haptics. The act of accommodation forces fluid from the haptics into the optic thereby increasing thickness and optical power. During dis-accommodation fluid flows back into the haptics.

Setting:

A Private Clinic, Optimed Eye and Laser Centre, Pretoria, South Africa

Methods:

The pilot clinical investigation enrolled 26 eyes from 26 patients and was performed at a single center with two surgeons (PR, FP). Patients were followed-up at 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks and at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months with routine ophthalmological examinations and multiple measures of accommodation and accommodative amplitude. Eight patients had FluidVision AIOLs implanted in their fellow eyes at 15 to 21 months after first eye surgery. Follow-ups were scheduled for 1 week, 2 weeks and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months following fellow eye surgery.

Results:

The average best distance corrected binocular acuities one month were (n=7): distance, logMAR -0.05 (Standard Deviation, SD 0.05); intermediate, 66 cm, logMAR 0.05 (SD 0.06); and near, 40 cm, logMAR 0.16 (SD 0.16). Binocular intermediate and near visual acuities were about one line better than monocular acuities. Average monocular uncorrected distance VA at one month was logMAR 0.11 (20/25-) and binocular uncorrected distance VA was logMAR 0.00 (20/20). Average monocular and binocular accommodative amplitude measured by defocus was 4.5 D and 5.0 D respectively (n=5).

Conclusions:

The FluidVision AIOL demonstrates excellent binocular visual acuity at distance, intermediate and near. Binocular intermediate and near VA were about one line better than monocular and uncorrected distance VA was 20/20. Accommodative amplitude measured by defocus was 5.0 D binocularly at 1 month after the second eye implant.
