Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness and optical quality of topical diquafosol 3.0% versus cyclosporine 0.05% in dry eye patients following cataract surgery.

Setting:

Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Methods:

Thirty-eight newly diagnosed patients (50 eyes) with dry eye syndrome 1 week after cataract surgery were randomly assigned to receive diquafosol 3.0% ophthalmic solution 6 times daily (n=25) or cyclosporine 0.05% 2 times daily (n=25). Schirmer test I (ST-I), tear film break-up time (tBUT), corneal fluorescein staining score, OSDI (Ocular Surface Disease Index) score and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were measured at 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months.

Results:

ST-I, tBUT were increased and corneal fluorescein staining score, OSDI score, HOAs decreased over time in the both groups (P<0.05). Diquafosol decreased total root mean square (RMS) HOAs and coma at 2 and 3 months compared with cyclosporine. But there is no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups.

Conclusions:

Topical diquafosol and cyclosporine 0.05% can be an effective treatment for dry eye and improved optical quality after cataract surgery.
