Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the correlation between the optical behaviour of tear film, dry eye signs and symptoms by measuring a Objective Scatter Index (OSI) using double pass aberrometry.

Setting:

Instituto Zaldivar, Mendoza, Argentina

Methods:

405 randomized eyes participated in this study. A double-pass aberrometer (HD Analyzer, Visiometrics, Barcelona, Spain) was used to measure the dynamic changes in the OSI for 20 seconds. The mean and standard deviations of the OSI, best fit line, mean square error and range were obtained in order to define tear film behavior patterns using support vector machines. Three main patterns and their borderline areas were derived from the optical behaviour of the tear film and we coined them: Plateau Pattern (P1), See Saw Pattern (P3) and Ladder Pattern (P5). 105 patients were also asked to complete subjective questionnaires.

Results:

50 patients were classified in P1, 9 patients in P2, 26 patients described P3 and 20 patients were involved in P4 and P5. There was a modest correlation is observed in all groups in relation with BUT, Mc Monnies and OSDI questionnaires.

Conclusions:

Dry eye signs, symptoms and optical analysis of the tear film have demonstrated lack of consistency. The analysis of OSI tear film patterns appears to be an objective way to assess the optical performance of subjective visual disturbances reported by patients with dry eye syndrome. It also provides a new tool to assess the tear film stability necessary for premium procedures such as trifocal IOLs and Inlays.
