Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate preoperative work-flow and patient comfort of measurements for a digital image guidance system which is used for intraoperative premium intraocular lens alignment.

Methods:

In this on-going prospective, randomized, IRB approved study preoperative measurements with the Verion image guidance system (Alcon Inc.) are investigated regarding work-flow and patient comfort using a detailed questionnaire and compared to standard pre-cataract surgery diagnostic measurements. Currently 53 healthy volunteers who underwent repeated measurements with the Verion image guidance system were evaluated regarding speed and usability of the measurements. Patient comfort was assessed with focus on brightness of light during the measurement, subjective duration and grading of the whole measurement. Same data was also assessed and compared for standard laser interference biometry and corneal topography.

Results:

Data sets of 53 volunteers, mean age 44 ± 17 years were available for evaluation. Time needed for the Verion measurement was 58.2 ± 30.7 seconds and graded 0.99 ± 1.22 on a scale from 0 to 10 (0 = no disturbance at all, 10 = severe disturbances). Brightness of light during the measurement was graded 2.35 ± 2.03 and duration 0.99 ± 1.60 on the same scale. Overall usability, work-flow and patient satisfaction was comparable to the other diagnostic devices. Detailed data analysis of 150 volunteers and comparison to laser biometry and corneal topography measurements will be presented.

Conclusions:

Digital image guidance during cataract or intraocular refractive lens surgery can facilitate premium IOL implantation without preoperative corneal marking. Preoperative measurements are crucial and the main step for successful and accurate intraoperative IOL alignment. Usability, work-flow and patient comfort for the Verion image guidance system measurements were graded very high and comparable to standard preoperative diagnostic devices.
