Abstract Details

Purpose:

Zeiss IOLMaster 700 is a new optical biometry device which integrates swept source OCT to the optical biometry to prevent errors and improve the quality of biometry. In this study, we compared the agreement between axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (K) readings of IOLMaster 700 with IOLMaster 500 (Zeiss IOLMaster 500 and 700, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany). In addition we compared two devices regarding the ability to measure AL in dense cataracts.

Setting:

The study was performed at Başkent University Eye Clinic, Ankara, Turkey.

Methods:

Fifty-five eyes of 55 patients (mean age: 64.42±11.12 years) evaluated for cataract surgery were included to the study. Mean AL, ACD, K values, and corneal astigmatism measured by the two devices were compared using paired sample T test, only if both devices were able to measure AL. The cataracts were also graded by the Lens Opacities Grading System (LOCS III) and the performances of two devices were compared regarding to AL measurements.

Results:

IOLMaster 700 was able to obtain AL measurements in all eyes. IOLMaster 500 was unable to measure 8 of the 55 eyes with posterior subcapsular cataracts (LOCS III psc grade≥4). In 47 eyes, AL measurements from both instruments were obtained and used in comparisons. IOLMaster 700 measured AL longer than 500, the difference was not significant (23.70±0.86µm and 23.08±3.86µm, respectively, p=0.33). The ACD was measured by IOLMaster 700 narrower than IOLMaster 500, (3.20±0.42µm, 3.31±0.41µm, respectively, p=0.001). The mean K readings of IOLMaster 700 and 500 were 42.81±1.34/43.77±1.57D and 42.82±1.29/43.81±1.45D. (Flat K, p=0,828 and Steep K, p=0.402, Astigmatism Magnitude, p=0.48).

Conclusions:

IOLMaster 700 is as precise as IOLMaster 500 in obtaining biometric data, additionally it can obtain biometric measurements of some patients who cannot be measured by IOLMaster 500 due to advanced posterior subcapsular cataract cataract.
