Abstract Details
Purpose:
To examine laboratory derived measurements of OVD pseudoplasticity, cohesion-dispersion index (CDI), and other data, and use it to generate innovative OVDs.
Setting:
Hyaltach Ltd. Laboratories, Livingston, Scotland, and York Finch Eye Associates, Toronto, Canada.
Methods:
Pseudoplasticity curves of multiple OVDs were produced. An improved standardized technique of CDI assessment was developed. The CDI curves and pseudoplasticity curves of a number of OVDs from different companies and origin were measured and studied. Issues in the assessment of CDI were identified, and resolved.
Results:
When multiple points are generated for CDI curves, the issue of where to take the tangent to yield surgically analogous laboratory data becomes important. Our solution will be discussed and illustrated, along with the results of using the data generated to suggest new OVD development.
Conclusions:
The CDI is an important, but not a simple measurement, and data should be derived considering its application in eye surgery. When combined with other rheologic data, it may be helpful in suggesting newer OVDs.
