Abstract Details

Purpose:

To introduce the world's first cornea supported intraocular lens especially designed for use along with complex PKP surgery.

Setting:

Athensvision Eye Institute, Hellenic EyeBank Demokritos-Grigoris Georgariou, Greece

Methods:

The eyebank prepares a composite of a femtosecond laser precut 8.00mm corneal graft with our patented endoskeleton which may also carry an intraocular lens and/or an artificial iris component. The composite is positioned in situ in its final position without sutures.

Results:

we believe that against current belief an intraocular lens supported by the cornea will actually protect the donor endothelium since by definition the IOL-endothelium distance is going to be known and stable which is different with our previous experience with all other anterior chamber IOL's in the setting of PKP. The IOL and/or Iris Barrier may also protect against the well known zipping up the angle phenomenon after PKP. (peripheral synechial formation). The IOL may be exchanged/introduced later once the healing of the corneal wound has been stabilized. The cornea optical zone may remain unsutured from day one, the pupil and IOL are by design completey aligned with each other and all intraocular gymnastics are eliminated.

Conclusions:

We introduce yet an other unique way of an IOL supporting system in the case of PKP. The CORSIL (Corneal Supported Intraocular Lens) may simplify the performance of PKP, iridoplasty and IOL placement by eliminating sutures and intraocular gymnastics making this demanding surgery easier and probably safer.
