Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the risk factors for retreatment following laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in hyperopic eyes.

Setting:

Retrospective study included hyperopic patients who underwent LASIK between January 2000 and October 2014 at the Care-Vision Laser Centers, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Methods:

Patients were divided into two groups according to whether or not they underwent additional refractive surgery (retreatment).

Results:

Overall, 2452 eyes of 1,302 patients were included. The retreatment group had a significantly lower mesopic pupil size, cylinder and operating room (OR) temperature; a significantly higher best corrected visual acuity and OR humidity; were predominantly male and had an against the rule cylinder axis. They predominantly underwent LASIK with a 6.0 mm optical zone (as opposed to 6.5 or 7.0), Allegretto laser (as opposed to EX500) and Moria M2 microkeratome (as opposed to Moria SBK). Multiple binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that an optical zone of 7.0 mm (odds ratio 4.85, p=0.02) and Allegreto laser (odds ratio 2.63, p=0.03) were significant risk factors for retreatment.

Conclusions:

The optical zone diameter and type of laser used when performing LASIK in hyperopic patients predict the need for retreatment. These factors may be incorporated into nomograms to reduce future retreatment rates in such patients.
