Abstract Details

Purpose:

The study's aim is to ascertain the subjective quality of vision and symptoms after wavefront guided fs-LASIK with the optical zone diameter of 6.0 mm or 6.5 mm for myopia.

Setting:

In this prospective study 118 patients underwent wavefront-guided Femto-LASIK and are questioned. Data from 236 eyes could considered. Augen+Laserzentrum Leipzig , Lampestraße 1, 04107 Leipzig, Germany.

Methods:

Group A includes the eyes with an optical zone of 6.0 mm (n = 155) and group B the eyes with an optical zone of 6.5 mm (n = 81). A questionnaire was developed to evaluate the preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and night vision. The subjects were asked about symptoms before and after wavefront guided fs-LASIK and about their satisfaction with the result of surgery.

Results:

In both groups, all respondents are satisfied with the results of wavefront-guided-fs-LASIK. In group A 94.8% of the subjects (group B:100%) would submit such surgery again and 96.1% (group B:97.5%) would recommend the fs-LASIK to a friend. In group A, rated as 'very good' 61.9% the visual acuity (group B:66.7%), 61.9% the contrast sensitivity (group B:74.1) and 38.7% the night vision (Group B:55.6%). Postoperatively, halos were reported by 11.6% (group B:7.4%), starbursts by 7.1% (group B:4.9%), blurred vision by 0.6% (group B:0%), dry eyes by 1.3% (group B:2.5%) and blending by 2.6% (group B:7.4%) of the subjects in group A.

Conclusions:

To optimize postoperative quality of vision after wavefront-guided fs LASIK, it is recommended to have a optical zone >6.0 mm. After LASIK the subjects of group B noticed significantly less problems with vision at night and blurred vision than in group A.
