Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the safety, efficacy, predictability and stability of SMILE procedure to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Clinica oftalmologica COC, Murcia, Spain.

Methods:

Prospective case series with 500 eyes of 260 patients with myopia and myopic astigmatism, treated with the VisuMax® femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) and the ReLEx SMILE procedure, between June 2012 and February 2014. The main outcome measures were the safety, efficacy, predictability and stability of the refractive results. Postoperative follow-up appointments were scheduled at 1 day and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and spherical equivalent (SE) were measured in all cases.

Results:

Preoperatively, mean CDVA was 1.08±0.11, mean SE was -3.81±1.68 diopters (D), and mean myopic astigmatism was -0.85±0.84D. One year after surgery, mean UDVA was 1.04±0.16, 91% of eyes had UDVA ≥1.0, 95.3% had unchanged CDVA, 2.5% lost 1 line, 0.7% lost ≥2 lines, 1.5% gained ≥1 line. At 12-month follow-up, 96% of eyes were within ±0.50D and 98.44% within ±1.00D of the intended refractive target (R2=0.9793). The preoperative mean SE of -3.81±1.68D was reduced to -0.0097±0.12D after 1 month, and it gradually regressed by 0.0433D to -0.053±0.24D after 1 year.

Conclusions:

ReLEx SMILE is a safe, predictable and effective procedure to treat myopia and myopic astigmatism with long term refractive stability.
