Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate topography-guided transepithelial ablation in the treatment of high myopic eyes (> 7.5 dpt) using a 1KHz excimer laser.

Setting:

Retrospective study at Tertiary Teaching Hospital, Switzerland

Methods:

Retrospective study of 92 eyes of 58 patients available for evaluation 3 and 12 months after surgery. Preoperative and postoperative visual and refractive data as well as postoperative haze were analysed. A novel technique integrating custom refractive and epithelial ablation in a single uninterrupted procedure was used.

Results:

The mean pre-operative spherical equivalent (SE) was: -8.94 diopters (D) ± 0.90 (SD). Uncorrected distant visual acuity after 3 and 12 months were ≥ 20/20 in 76%, respectively 88% of the eyes. Manifest refraction spherical equivalent was within ± 1.0 D of the desired refraction in 96% of the eyes. No eyes lost ≥2 lines of corrected distant visual acuity or formed relevant haze after 12 months.

Conclusions:

One-step transepithelial topography-guided treatment for high myopia performed with a 1KHz laser provided predictable and stable results and no significant haze.
