Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical outcomes of Smart Pulse technology and compare myopic astigmatism correction using two types of ablation protocols; Cornea wavefront guided (COWAVE) and aberration free (AbFree) profiles with the Amaris 1050RS.

Setting:

Eyereum Eye Clinic, Seoul, South Korea. The Institute of Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea.

Methods:

In this prospective study, 1110 eyes of 600 patients scheduled for myopic astigmatism correction were enrolled and randomized into two groups; COWAVE group (600 eyes) and AbFree (510 eyes) group. Parameters including uncorrected distance visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity, manifested refraction, astigmatism, total root mean square (RMS), spherical, and coma aberrations were evaluated preoperative, 1 month, and 2 months after surgery. Independent t test and repeated measures analysis of variance with bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons were performed.

Results:

All groups demonstrated fast visual acuity recovery within 2 weeks (UCVA 1 week:0.83±0.24. 2 weeks: 1.00±0.21). For both groups there was a significant increase in total RMS and spherical aberrations at 1 and 2 months but coma decreased postoperatively in the COWAVE group. There was significantly less induction of spherical aberrations for the COWAVE group when compared to AbFree group from baseline. (P=0.008 for 1 month and P=0.011 for 2 months).

Conclusions:

Smart pulse technoilogy showed fast early visual recovery after surface ablation. COWAVE and AbFree profiles were efficacious and safe with the 1050hZ laser. Between the groups, there was a significant difference in high order aberrations postoperatively, demonstrating lower values of coma and spherical aberration induction in the COWAVE group.
