Abstract Details

Purpose:

To correlate amplitude and latency of pupillary response with total mGCC in bilateral primary open angle glaucoma.

Setting:

Tertiary eye hospital in Bangalore, India

Methods:

Thirty eyes of 15 patients of bilateral Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) were recruited into this study. The macular ganglion cell thickness and the retinal nerve layer were analyzed using a Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (Optovue RTvue XR AVANTI). Automated pupillograph was performed using RAPDx (Konan Medical, USA). The amplitude and latency of pupillary responses were correlated with the mGCC values.

Results:

Mean age of the patients was (62.22 ±11.09) years. Total mGCC in POAG was (78.21 ±14.72)µ. The mean amplitude change of RAPD was (0.89±0.36)mm, percent change in amplitude was (22.96±7.56)%, mean latency was (284.43±35.66) ms. The amplitude change correlated with total mGCC (r= 0.577, p=0.001) and latency (r= -0.512 ,p=0.004).

Conclusions:

Percent of change in amplitude of pupillary diameter measured on RAPDx and latency are affected in glaucomatous damage and correlate with total macular ganglion cell thickness. The use of this short, automated device to assess the RAPD is feasible and correlates with structural loss.
