Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the safety and efficacy of the iolAMD technology (London Eye Hospital Pharma, London, Great Britain), which includes 2 injectable, hydrophobic acrylic IOLĀ“s in a pilot study of patients with cataract and dry age-related macular degeneration.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology Goethe-University Frankfurt

Methods:

A prospective, nonrandomized clinical trial was conducted consisting of 3 eyes (2 patients) with cataract and bilateral intermediate dry AMD. The cataract surgery and IOL implantation was performed after a preoperative evaluation using iolAMD simulator (London Eye Hospital Pharma, London, Great Britain). Outcomes were intra- and postoperative complications, subjective and objective visual acuity improvement, visual field changes, postoperative diplopia.

Results:

Three eyes of 2 patients were evaluated. The surgeries were uneventful. All eyes gained monocular reading vision at 1-week postoperative visit. One patient with monocular implantation recognized diplopia for distance vision.

Conclusions:

These early results showed that the iolAMD is a promising technology improving near and distance visual acuity in eyes with intermediate dry macular degeneration. The prismatic IOL effect did not lead to diplopia when implanted bilaterally. The surgery was safely performed.
